A precocious songwriter, she released a series of EPs in , aged 17, which immediately attracted attention for the richness of her lyrics and melodious, understated vocal presence. Having moved to London from her family home in Hampshire, Marling was quickly identified as a shining star in a vibrant scene, framing contemporary songwriting in a more traditional musical background. It gives it a more communal feel than singer-songwriter, it suggests it is something shared and open.
